906, 908, and 910 Fayetteville, the block between Fowler Avenue (to the north) and East Piedmont Avenue (to the south) was a residential block. In 1923, 906 was occupied by ER Merrick.

This block was still intact 40 years later, when the following photographs were taken for urban renewal appraisals.

By 1968, these houses were demolished. By the 1990s, this site was redeveloped with a gas station/convenience store commercial structure facing the 'new' Fayetteville St.

Great curb appeal!

Another ugly scar on Durham that won't heal.

Not only demolished the houses, but looks like they took a good eight feet of the ground/dirt as well. Heaven forbid we actually have some topography in the area.

Any idea what is written on the sign hanging above the steps at 910?

I'm not sure - I went back to my original scan to see if I could make it out, but it is blurry. I've placed my best attempt to clean up the sign from the original here. It sort of looks like the left side has an acronym, which I think is IBPO (International Benign Paternal Order?), and Bull City _ _ underneath. The left side appears to have another acronym, maybe "E of W"? and it seems like "female" is in the lower text... that's the best I could do.
